THE Launceston City Council has today voted to approve an discretionary planning permit fora controversial chicken shed at Lalla.
Some amendments surrounding environment provisions were included.
It was approved seven votes to five, with Aldermen Ted Sands, Emma Williams, Andrea Dawkins, Danny Gibson, and mayor Albert van Zetten voting against the permit.
It took the council two hours of debate in front of a packed public gallery to reach its decision.
Olsons Eggs will house 7200 free-range chickens in the shed on its Quills Road property.
Construction of the partially built shed was halted when it was discovered the chickens would be housed within the recommended 500-metre attenuation distance from neighbouring homes.
A portion of the community came out against the shed in fear of its potential environmental impacts.
