Grave discovery: The final resting place of Hedley Joyce, the only member of the Murray Cods rowing crew who never made it to their unlikely appearance at the 1924 Olympics.NINETY years after a crew of working-class rowers from Murray Bridge stepped onto French shores for the 1924 Olympic Games, filmmaker Wayne Groom is retracing their unlikely footsteps.
Mr Groom, producer of an upcoming documentary titled “Paris or the Bush”, has visited London, Cambridge, Paris and Dublin in search of clues about the Murray Cods’ exploits, which came to a climax at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
He also toured the First World War’s western front and discovered the grave of Hedley Joyce, the only one of the Cods who never made it to those games.
“Hedley’s death came near the tiny hamlet of Noreuil as his battalion chased the Germans during their retreat to the Hindenburg Line on the second of April, 1917,” he said.
“He was found dead in a bomb crater, clutching a page of the Bible with the Lord’s Prayer on it, suggesting he might have known his death was near, surrounded by Germans.
“The fields are mostly open and flat here, it is bitingly cold in winter and the mud is thick and sticks to your boots immediately.”
More encouraging were his visits to what remained of the 1924 Olympic stadium, the Cods’ training site at Nogent-sur-Marne, and the river course where they raced a famous final against a team from Derry, Northern Ireland.
A newspaper of the time reportedly called it “the greatest event in Derry since the siege (of 1688)”.
Mr Groom also made progress towards finding out what happened to the Cods’ boat.
A museum in New South Wales claims to have it on display, but he suspects it was given to the City of Derry Boat Club, then a university boat club, then scrapped.
“This is an enthralling journey which keeps getting better and more mesmerising every day,” he said.
The documentary is scheduled for release later this year. – Details: To find out more about “Paris or the Bush”, visit www.codsrowing南京夜网.
