War Chief successfully ridden at Wagga Rodeo. Video: Andrew Roberts, A Roberts MediaTUMBARUMBA bull rider Ben Hall has written his name into the history books after successfully riding Australia’s toughest bucking bull.
Mr Hall, 24, made a qualified ride on the notorious War Chief owned by John Gill and Sons from The Rock at the Wagga Rodeo on Saturday.
Before that War Chief had never been successfully ridden in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA), and he was known for bucking off hundreds of cowboys.
“The Australians, Americans and Canadians have all been on him and nobody had managed to ride him,” Mr Hall said.
A couple of years ago Rhys Angland, from Wantabdagery made a record ride on the bull at the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft Association (ABCRA) rodeo at Coonamble.
But up until Saturday War Chief still remained unridden onthe APRA circuit.
Mr Hall said it was an outstanding feeling to know he had successfully ridden War Chief.
“At the time it was a blur, he is just so powerful and quick, you need to be reacting all the time,” he said.
The successful ride earned the Tumbarumba competitor 85 points.
“This was my fifth attempt on him, every other time he has put me on the ground and made a mess of me, he is so strong and so powerful, he will tear the shirt off you,” Mr Hall said.
Despite previous attempts on War Chief Mr Hall said this didn’t really help because the bull was just so difficult.
“You could watch videos of 10 rides and it wouldn’t help you, he does something different and unpredictable each time,” he said.
“I decided to stick to my basics and stay in the moment, that is all that helped me really.”
Mr Hall has been riding bulls since he was 17 and also competes in bronc riding events.
He works as a horse trainer and said growing up at Tumbarumba gave him a good introduction into the sport of rodeo.
