A surfer braves a beach covered in rubbish.OCEAN pollution awareness is the main driver behind a community trivia night as part of Surfest 2015.
Family Trivia Tour – Saving the Oceans from Plastic Pollution is a family event presented by well-known quizmaster Anthony Hill and Surfride Foundation Australia Hunter Chapter.
Mr Hill is touring the country with the show to raise awareness and funds to combat plastic pollution in our oceans.
Latest studies have estimated there are more than 5.25 trillion plastic particles on the ocean’s surface and one thousand times that floating beneath.
By raising awareness of the issue, Mr Hill hopes to convince people to switch from plastic to biodegradable products, all while having a bit of fun.
‘‘The average person is not aware of the severity of plastic pollution of our oceans and how fast it’s growing with increasing world population and consumption,’’ Mr Hill said.
‘‘Although many people are also unaware of just how important the ocean is to the planet’s ecosystems, most of us have an affinity and some kind of connection to the ocean and would hate to see it turn into a dead soup of plastic waste.’’
The trivia night will test general knowledge and is open to all ages, with prizes and raffles on offer.
Entry is by gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to Surfrider Foundation Australia.
